I love the way Poe takes the obvious and weaves a story around it. Poe has such a way with the twisted material he writes. Our narrator meets an old friend on a voyage. The mystery is pretty obvious from the beginning, but the narration is brilliant and very entertaining. And I’ll never understand people sacrificing their own lives for dead bodies. A passenger on a summer voyage to New York is curious about an artist, his new wife and his luggage.

Excellente histoire et quelle plume! At first it seemed like a detective story with a touch of supernatural.
But, this is Poe, so the reader expected it, whereas the character probably wouldn’t expect something so grotesque. I did guess the mystery though I didn’t figure out every detail. I am sure I would have enjoyed this story so much more if the narrator hadn’t sounded like he was lecturing instead of reading an Edgar Allan Poe short story. I wonder if there is an on-line class for that? The box, the narrator is surprised to learn, shares the state-room with Wyatt and his wife, while the second room is shared by the two sisters.
While she is gone, the narrator believes he hears his friend opening the box and sobbing, which he attributes to “artistic enthusiasm”.
It is gruesome, not because he describes all the gory details but because he leaves so much to your imagination. He’s surprised that his friend’s wife is ugly, when she was supposed to be pretty. The tale is centered around a mysterious box and a sea travel. Wonderfully-told alllan that kept my interest, with a little bit of the “creepy factor. For several nights, the narrator witnesses his friend’s surprisingly unattractive wife leaving the state-room every night around 11 o’clock and going into the third state-room before returning first thing in the morning.
I chuckled excessively when I thought of my acumen. As someone that occasionally reads and frequently watches horror, I expected it to go in a different direction so I was pleasantly surprised by allqn ending.

I am so glad that I didn’t have to live in Mr. The narrator notes its peculiar shape and an especially odd odor coming from it. But the end truly made it even weirder.
